PROFILE

Miss Fiona Irvine is a full‑time Consultant based at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital in Exeter. She specialises in eyelid, lacrimal, orbital, and general ophthalmology, and has established herself as a leading expert in oculoplastic surgery in the South West of England. 

ROLES AND SERVICES

  • She founded the oculoplastic service at Exeter two decades ago. This service provides oculoplastic, orbital, lacrimal, and paediatric ophthalmology to patients in the South West. 

  • Alongside her NHS work, she runs a private practice, offering procedures including aesthetic eyelid surgery (upper and lower lid blepharoplasty) for excess or droopy eyelid skin. 

 

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • Qualified from the Royal Free Hospital Medical School in London. 

  • Surgical training included foundation training at Addenbrookes (Cambridge) and higher surgical training at The Tennent’s Institute in Glasgow. 

  • Undertook an international fellowship in oculoplastics, orbital and lacrimal surgery under Mr Alan McNab in Melbourne, Australia. 

  • Before returning to Exeter, she established a similar service as a Consultant in Northampton.

WORKLOAD AND CONTRIBUTIONS

  • Since 2007 (when she took up her Consultant post), she has carried out in excess of 400 specialist oculoplastic / orbital / lacrimal operations per year. 

  • Miss Irvine also runs a renowned subspecialty training fellowship in oculoplastic, orbital, and lacrimal surgery, now in its 10th year. This program attracts UK and international trainees—particularly from Australia and New Zealand—reflecting her strong professional ties with the Australasian ophthalmic community following her advanced training in Melbourne

Miss Irvine is known for being approachable, honest, and patient‑centred. Her philosophy emphasises:

  • Thorough discussion and examination to understand each patient’s unique eyelid, orbital, and lacrimal anatomy and needs. 

  • Choosing the correct surgical procedure that does not compromise function (vision, eyelid protection etc.), while achieving the best cosmetic outcomes. 

  • Ensuring the patient feels relaxed and comfortable, with as pain‑free an experience as possible during surgery and anaesthesia.
